Penn State Nittany Lions

Overall Strategy:

  • Focused on a strong, balanced offense that utilizes all hitters, particularly their middles early and often.
  • Emphasized solid passing to allow their setter, Izzy Stark, to have all options available.
  • Maintained a disciplined blocking scheme with hands over the net to turn balls back into their court.
  • Deployed a strong defensive system with scrappy liberos and excellent backcourt coverage.
  • Improved their level of play as the match went on, rather than tapering off as the match went on.

Key Players:

  • Taylor Trammell (Middle Blocker): Veteran presence, key to their early offense and critical on the block, excellent hitting percentage.
  • Caroline Jervis (Right Side): Increased confidence and effectiveness as the season progressed, able to get kills off blocks.
  • Izzy Stark (Setter): Freshman setter running the offense; she is able to locate the ball very well, and get her hitters involved. She's been able to make great decisions and set well in transition.
  • Jess Mruzik (Outside Hitter): Powerful hitter known for sharp cross-court kills, consistent scoring throughout the match. Great hitter, leader of the team. Her number go up as the match goes on.
  • Cameron Hannah (Outside Hitter): Strong hitter, who can score from anywhere on the court, has become a back row threat, hits from every location, including in transition.

  • Gillian Grimes (Libero): She has a good volleyball IQ, good at diggin the ball and turning it into points.

Offensive Strategy

  • Employed a 5-1 offense, often with a setter upfront (Izzy Stark), allowing for multiple hitters in front.
  • Their middles were a key part of their offense, but also utilize their pins to balance their attack, taking advantage of openings in the block

Defensive Strategy

  • A strong block, but also a solid defense that's good at reading the game, and keeping the ball off of the floor.
  • They use 3 liberos to cover the court.
  • They focus on first contact so they can have a successful attack.

Louisville Cardinals

Overall Strategy:

  • A typically middle-centric offensive strategy, especially with their freshman center, but with an emphasis on using all of their hitters, especially in the absence of Anna De Beer.
  • Relied heavily on their blocking as the number one blocking team in the nation, focused on closing seams and being disciplined at the net.Looked to pressure opponents with aggressive serving, but needed to be more consistent in serve-receive.
  • Struggled to find their energy and rhythm early in the match, particularly without their emotional leader on the court.

Key Players:

  • Payton Peterson (Right Side/Outside): True freshman who stepped up in place of Anna De Beer, handled a lot of pressure in serve receive and attack.
  • Sofia Maldonado Diaz (Right Side/Outside): Transferred to Louisville and a key offensive player, known for disciplined hands over the net on blocks and solid on the attack.
  • Elena Scott (Libero): Key defensive player with great ball control, vocal leader, and is capable of dishing out great assists out of the back row.
  • Charity Looper (Right Side/Outside): Powerful hitter, able to get kills from both the front row and back row, becomes a very important player with the loss of Anna De Beer.
  • Dailes Kibeho (Middle Blocker): Freshman center with a strong presence at the net, vocal leader.
  • Hannah Sherman (Middle Blocker): A good blocker who comes off the bench to provide quality block points.

Offensive Strategy

  • Utilized a 6-2 offense, but transitioned to a 5-1 offense.
  • Relied on a middle-heavy offense, but had to balance their attack due to strong opposition blocking.

Defensive Strategy

  • The number one blocking team in the nation, focused on disciplined hands and closing seams at the net, but still was out blocked by Penn State.
  • Utilized excellent back court defense, a strong defense that's good at reading the game and keeping the ball off of the floor.
